EP Review: Naomisia's 'What Doesn't Kill You'
Singer/Songwriter Naomisia released her debut EP 'What Doesn’t Kill You’ this week and it is R&B gold! Her penmanship, the production and her oh so sultry voice evokes such amorous feelings as we slowly drift away from the East African summer.
There is nothing I love more than African vernacular (in this case, Swahili) seeping into my eardrums in sweet sultry symphony. The title of the EP tells it like it is. In the words of many greats, “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” and that is the true testament of her heart's tale throughout this project.
Right from the get go she starts us off with ‘Victim', which honestly tells us all we need to know. A particular line that stood out to me was, “you don’t smoke, but you pipe it up”, a cunning way of letting us know the type of person she (and also we) are about to deal with. She follows up with ‘Pumzika’, the leading single off the EP that switches the narrative only slightly from one of lust to one of love.
Throughout the project I realise that it’s a relatable anecdote of the euphoric yet anxious feeling most of us get during the first few weeks of getting to know someone we’re attracted to, which inherently leads up to the “what are we” bombshell question many avoid that’s bound to linger at some point.
From my point of view, Naomisia is gently daring us to question whether we are willing to take a leap of faith on our new subject of interest and ride blindly on desires chariot and if it crashes and goes up in smoke, will we be okay with simply charging it to the game and banking on character development for the next chapter?
What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger right?
