Vallerie Muthoni’s latest project, Pisces SZN, is a not so subtle reminder that Vallerie Muthoni is a definite one-to-watch from Nu Nairobi’s burgeoning music scene. With the release of her first EP The Wavey Soul just last year, and several live performances, Vallerie Muthoni is determined to curve her mark on Nairobi’s rap scene and solidify her status as a future legend. Not one to be tied down by genre, Pisces SZN serves as further evidence of the emcee’s musical versatility. She moves from ‘Legendary’, a head-bopping trap track, to the RnB/Future Bass ‘New Flex’, to an infections Afrobeats number featuring fellow Nu Nairobians RU.BY, and finally ‘A Milli (Brown Suga Refix)’ a worthy cover of Lil Wayne’s iconic single.

On the EP’s first track Legendary,Vallerie Muthoni confidently stakes her claim as an up and coming legend over a track that features the juxtaposition of a recurring Spanish guitar-riff with bass-heavy trap beats. The emcee wittily references her opening set for Nigerian superstar Burna Boy in Nairobi late last year - “I been setting flames to the stage, Ask Burna/Yes, that was a pun, lyrically I’ll burn ya” as she lets us know that this will be her year - “I keep on winning and winning, I guess it’s in my bloodstream/Spicy SZN, I’m with it, 2019 – that’s the theme.” She isn’t being braggadocios. Through consistent creative output, relentless self-promotion, and securing performances on some of Nairobi’s hottest stages, Vallerie Muthoni is a hustler, and her hard work is paying off

New Flex is a future bass/R&B anthem dedicated to all those who have had the misfortune of dating a player. Vallerie’s vocals shine through as she tells the story of a trifling man (dare I say it, men are tr-) but our femcee gets her own back - “But now I got a New Flex and I aint stressing/All your bullshit I won’t be missing.” The EP’s third song sees the emcee collaborate with Taio and Ru.By on Spicy SZN, a groovy, afrobeats-inspired track whose catchy hook will have you itching to hit the dance-floor. The song celebrates independent women getting their own bread - ‘Said mi a bad gyal, no Riri/Stay busy all day, John Cena can’t see me’.

The final track ‘A Milli (Brown Suga Refix)’ is a brilliant re-work. Brown Suga, the emcee’s alter ego, takes over and her confident bars are spat over a live recording session. The band fuses dissonant gospel chords, electric guitar riffs, and funky bass lines which gives this cover a distinct it’s distinct sound. Aptly entitled a refix, this is Lil Wayne’s iconic single as you haven’t heard before.

The EP will be hitting streaming services soon but is currently available for purchase on here (let’s support artists!).
