Bakhita Sets Herself Free With ‘CHAMO MILLE: PYE’

About a week ago singer/songwriter Bakhita released her debut album ‘CHAMO MILLE: PYE’ as an ode to finally breaking free from the shackles of life's continuous constraints. The album is a collaboration between herself and LEMI who executive produced the 7 track album released on all major platforms.

The artist painted the cover art on a massive canvas over a long period of time and quarantine allowed her to finally finish it. She said to me that the culmination of the music she was making at the time and the completion of the painting just made sense of what she was expressing through this project

There’s a huge sense of sentimentality and growth in each song as they reflect a deeper sense of self awareness of the singer. She speaks of her energy not being for free, not wanting to keep up with empty love, learning to let go and finding her way in this strange world. In an instagram post caption, she explains the deeper meaning behind the painting and how it became the cover art of this project.

Through what I think is becoming her signature style, she switches from singing light but rich melodies to more serious rap deliveries (almost as if unleashing an  alter ego) that keenly contrast the lessons she’s had to learn through her mistakes in order to step into this current higher version of herself.

I can picture her singing these songs in a classy jazz bar or an open field, either way you will be caught unaware by the groovy motifs that will have you swinging and swaying your body.

Three songs from the project namely: “Upstairs” “Dem Go Know” and “Will” have a colourful one part music video release on YouTube, with a second one well on its way for the later parts of the year. The three videos clearly depict the sense of confidence Bakhita feels in her new found freedom surrounded by a community of magical beings. She has managed to fight for and create her own world by her own means, and we should also be encouraged to do the same.

I can’t wait to experience more from her journey!
