EA Wave and Wanja Wohoro's 'Honey' Feels Like A Much Needed Warm Hug
Eclectic producer collective EA Wave and soulful, afro-indie singer Wanja Wohoro fuse their sonic worlds together to produce Honey. This two-track EP feels like a much needed warm hug, and is a welcomed and comforting distraction during these seemingly apocalyptic times.
Side A of the project, “Honey Bee”, marries future bass and R&B. The tracks upbeat, feel good tempo is reminiscent of a bee’s energy and is perhaps what influenced the tracks title (excuse the speculation). Wanja’s poetic songwriting is given room to take centre-stage and you find comfort in her warm, husky vocals as she details the sweet euphoria of believing in and loving someone.
The projects side B cut, “Honey Dew”, is sticky and, in contrast to its antecedent, slowed down and mellow. The collective’s production is the focal point and Wanja’s hypnotic vocals underpin the track giving the song a lullaby-like quality. EA Wave incorporate a clever production technique towards the end that isolates synth claps and a funky bass riff that briefly breaks you from the lull. It’s as if you’re momentarily jolted awake from a dream but then drift back asleep as the track closes out with Wanja’s voice floating over a repeated, delicate piano melody.
