Review: Akoth Jumadi's 'Jangolo' Video Is A Spritual Experience
As Akoth Jumadi is about to celebrate the first year anniversary of her debut EP ‘ERE YO’, her latest offering to end the year is the debut of a stunning video that accompanies ‘Jangolo’, the EP’s only single. According to the artist, “Jangolo is a celebration of the struggles faced by creatives in a heavily saturated creative industry. It's blocking out the noise and focusing on the little things that accumulate to make of journeys what they are. Its betting on yourself and defining freedom in your own terms”. In Luo it describes a person who plays, creates and sings music.
Shot in beautiful Kilifi by Théa Gourdon, the scenes set are decadent to the eye. The opening shot lures you into the melodic tale Akoth narrates with her voice. Théa’s choice of a soft colour enhances the song’s intimate subtlety. You can feel the song’s delicate message moving through each of the depictions of mother nature and her creations presented in the video. Beings, water bodies, trees, landscapes - Akoth's inner spirit shines throughout this video. She’s adorned in carefully crafted attire, morphing her with the nature that surrounds her while strapped to her guitar or padding a wooden boat. It’s an ode to natural creativity, to music and how music moves us.
