Ebne Hakim’s Debut EP "Brana" Is A Poetic Exploration Of The Dualities of Life

Ethiopian singer-songwriter Ebne Hakim has graced the music world with his debut EP, "Brana." Born and raised in Ethiopia, he began his creative journey by sharing his poetry anonymously, which eventually led to his seamless transition into music. Shaped by the bustling streets of Addis Ababa, the pulse of deep-rooted traditions, and a wide array of musical influences from within his family. Ebne Hakim’s artistry blossomed, blending traditional Ethiopian sounds with contemporary genres like Alternative R&B, Pop, Funk, Soul, and Electronic. This ethio-fusion creates a distinct sonic landscape that mirrors his journey through love, loss, and self-discovery.

The EP opens with "Brana (Intro)," a cryptic and poetic glimpse into Ebne Hakim's narrative. Sung in Amharic, the lyrics explore themes of beauty, jealousy, love, betrayal, and self-discovery through vivid imagery and metaphor. The song also references biblical allusions "አንቺው ዕጸ ለባዊት ፣ አንቺው ውድቀት አዳም (You the fruit of wonder, You the downfall of Adam)" evoking the biblical story of the Garden of Eden, symbolizing temptation and loss of innocence. This track sets a somber yet profound tone, encapsulating the essence of heartbreak and betrayal.

"Yaneta" follows, presenting a dual-path narrative enriched with wisdom and introspection. Also performed in Amharic, It uses storytelling and metaphor to impart lessons about life, The song also addresses broader societal issues:

አዲስ ወግ ተላመድን
We caught a new drift
Empty pockets normalizing sins
We’re all humans, but the last thing we understand is each other
Turning our backs on the kindness of our mother

These lines critique the normalization of immoral behavior and highlight a lack of mutual understanding among people. The Lyrical arrangement on this track is compelling allowing his poignant storytelling to take center stage.

On "Qal Becha," Ebne Hakim delves deeper into the pain of unfulfilled promises and lost love. The song resonates with anyone who has experienced the anguish of heartbreak. The interplay between his soulful voice and the melancholic instrumentation evokes a sense of yearning and sorrow, making it one of the most emotionally charged tracks on the EP.

"Gela," the debut single, stands out with its hypnotic blend of R&B and electronic elements. The repetitive and rhythmic structure of the song, combined with its vivid imagery, conveys a powerful message that explores the complexities of human emotions and life’s duality – the sins and virtues, ideals and reality, love and heartbreak. The infectious groove and Ebne Hakim’s smooth vocals create a compelling contrast to the darker lyrical content, showcasing his ability to merge traditional Ethiopian sounds with modern influences seamlessly.

"Yehuna (Interlude)" offers a brief yet impactful pause in the EP. It is an introspective song that delves into themes of sorrow, resilience, and the search for inner peace. The lyrics contrast an outward smile with an inward void, highlighting isolation and desolation. The narrator reflects on past mistakes, a turbulent period of conflict and regret. The chorus introduces acceptance and resilience, acknowledging the universality of suffering. The song also explores the narrator's struggle with happiness, expressing a sense of inadequacy.

The closing track, "Gud New," is a song that captures the essence of unexpected romantic infatuation and admiration. Through its vivid imagery and repetitive exclamations, the song conveys the narrator’s awe-struck reaction to a captivating woman. The blend of resignation, wonder, and conflict creates a compelling narrative.

Heard you were here, Miss Beautiful Demeanor
The one who sewed and wore beauty like a gown
Heard you were here, Miss Pain Reliever
The dark skin with the smile
