BE-U | Q&A’s with East Africa’s bright, bold and beautiful.

Justin Shema is a fashion model based in Kigali, Rwanda. From his voguish style and charming charisma, he is a sight to gaze upon when walking down the runway.

What is the scene for a model in Rwanda like/is there a market for someone to be a full-time model?

The hope is there, but I don't think that the industry is yet developed. Working in Rwanda as a full-time model would be quite difficult to do. The industry is fairly new so that means that there aren't a lot of sources when it comes to information about shoots happening or if there's a fashion show and they need models you'd have to be in the loop to get that information, so definitely as an upcoming model without a lot of contacts it would definitely be a struggle.

What has your experience as a model in Rwanda looked like?

My experience as a model thus far has been an interesting journey, getting a job can be a struggle because the different brands that usually hire don't exactly have the best ways of marketing the help that they need so you really have to keep a close eye of different brands and stay in the loop.

What's a must-do in Rwanda?

Kwitonda Luxury Lodge & Safari | Rwanda (Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda) Bisate Lodge, One&Only Gorilla’s Nest Nyungwe Forest National Park. These are must-go locations.
Which African brand/designer would you love to work with?

Currently, it would have to be MOSHIONS I love their work and the impact that they've had in Rwanda.

What would be your dream runway show?

Good question. Well, I guess my ultimate dream runway show would be the New York fashion week. I love it but I do love some others too. Milan and Paris fashion week are some of my favorites. It’s always a tough choice when it comes to International brands but If I have to pick one, it would have to be LOUIS VUITTON. As for the local brand, my favorite one is MOSHIONS. House of Tayo and Tanga Design is awesome too.

Which photographer would you love to work with and why?

Photography-wise, I would love to work with Julia Hetta someday. She’s just very good and original. Giampaolo Sgura and Jordan Snowzell are some others I would be glad to work with. But definitely, Julia Hetta is on the top of my list.

What's been your favorite show thus far?

It has to be the Kigali fashion week. I had the privilege to be a participant and it has been my favorite so far. It was an absolute pleasure and an incredible experience. I am now looking forward to another photoshoot that I’ll be having with MOSHIONS this February. It will be named Fashion X Culture.

What advice do you have for up-and-coming east African models?

Follow your passion and make sure to work hard, making sure to study for your work modeling is very versatile and has different areas to focus on depending on the shoot or show. Learn the skills for the job. Do your research and know what's happening, practice what you've learned, and have a good name in the industry.
